Data Center Tier System RevisedInstitute president Ken Brill recently attempted to set the record straight at Uptime symposium on high density computing. The Institute created a four tier rating system that applied the IT concepts of high availability and concurrent maintainability to the underlying data center infrastructure. Tier 1 data centers are at the bottom of the rating system and considered the most basic, while a Tier 4 is at the top and considered immune to planned and unplanned downtime. But as the Uptime tier standard gained popularity in the industry, made up terms like Tier 3 data center and plus started to pop up in meetings and events. He says the Institute created it in response to a customer who wanted to explain to his management why he was spending the money he was spending. It answered a fundamental need and has now become a default standard. However, Brill also says that the definitions are concrete and a data center is either concurrently maintainable or not. The Institute definition extends the idea of concurrent maintenance to infrastructure you need to be able to shut down any component of your power distribution or cooling systems and have a redundant system working uninterrupted by the maintenance, in order to be considered a full Tier 3 or Tier 4 data center. The reports describe key emerging trends, preview expected future events, and deliver substantial details on historic and forecasted revenues for colocation, Web hosting and managed infrastructure services on a company by company and industry wide basis.
