If you are anything like me getting shit done is the hardest part of any new venture. It is easy to have a brilliant Idea. A little hard but still super easy to get it started, but after a while the motivation and drive fades and you are stuck with an original great Idea and no drive to keep going.
It’s not easier when you have a day job that already requires most of your time.
Well let me show you a few things i use to keep myself motivated.
Toilet/Coffee break? Waiting for the Bus? Keep your project alive by just thinking about it. What are your next steps? What Marketing solutions could help? What is the one thing that customers await the most? Things like these will help you to keep focused.
I know this sounds simple but try it. If you are an inventor every day a new idea might look like a better opportunity than your current project. Write them down, but don’t start working on them while you are still in another project. If it is something you can do in an afternoon make sure this is true before you start it, else it may just will eat up time you could use for your main project.
Make yourself clear that your main project is what you want to do and create, and this will never happen if you are not able to focus. It will die out, like all the other projects you let die so far.
This not only should help you to focus by thinking about it. But also give feedback and social pressure . Feedback is a wonderful way to find out what people actually want. A piece of information you often lose when you focus too much into a single idea. That is not a bad thing actually, but it is important to see other point of views as well to keep a clear image of what people actually want and why you are doing what you are do. It is normal to get lost in details, but not necessary to get started, so try to avoid this as much as possible.
Social pressure is a wonderful tool as well. You want to show to your peers that you are able to create wonderful things and not just talk about them. You want them to respect you for your work. This expected human behaviour and works very well if done right.
As born lazypreneur it is hard for me to plan time for being productive. What I do is expecting myself to solve a problem a day. A problem might be staring at code for 5 hours straight or changing a single line of CSS for some eye candy reason. The important thing is I am getting forward, every day. It also helps to keep your project in your mind.
I would not suggest going overboard and start adding hour blocks to your calendar. Sure if this is how you work, why not. But i also think there are days where i am super productive, days where I am to lazy to code and just do some marketing and other days where I can barely look straight. So flexible planning is the way to go for me.
Dont try to get a jack of all trades. Scope your idea to where you are good at and build a foundation around this central piece. Especially when building a MVP less is almost always more. Scope your idea, make sure you really know what you want and try to not add a lot of more features and options while building it. Write them down, make a Todo list for after your release but make sure to always keep your real target in mind and try to be the very best in exactly that.
As soon as you get your product out there you will get really honest Feedback from unrelated people. Take it, read it and think about it. Most Feedback might will be useless for you, a lot will suggest changing the scope to something different (clearly ignore them) but others will give small details that will help you to make your product even more awesome.
When it is out there you can start doing Marketing, Social Media, Promotions, whatever. This will help your motivation a lot.
While this sounds ideal, it wont work for anyone and anytime. But maybe it is a good foundation for you too to build and finally get shit done.
What is your approach to getting stuff done? How and Why is it working for you?
