Because Telegram is something that renders public and private communications free, fast, secure and without hinderance, and the most important of all, it’s beyond any commercial or governmental control.
Anything that helps information, regardless it’s favourable or not, disseminate without hinderance is great, that is, it’s ultimately beneficial to the people. The Internet is precious precisely because of its function in this regard. On the other hand, the visible or invisible forces that are trying to block or filter information for their own sake never cease to grow. And that’s why Telegram is cool, and even should be described as great. Whatsapp, Line, or any other that is often compared to Telegram are actually far from its greatness.
Who is the one behind Telegram? Durov Brothers. According to Wikipedia,
Durov started VKontakte, later known as VK, in 2006, which was initially influenced by Facebook.
In 2011 he was involved in a standoff with a SWAT team outside his home in St. Petersburg after the government had demanded the removal of the pages of opposition politicians after controversial parliamentary elections. They left after about an hour.
On April 16, 2014 Durov publicly refused to hand over data of Ukrainian protesters to Russia’s security agencies and block Alexey Navalny’s page on VK. Instead he posted the relevant orders on his own VK page claiming that the requests were unlawful.
On April 21, 2014 Durov was dismissed as VK CEO. The company claimed it was acting on a letter of resignation written by Durov a month earlier that he supposedly failed to recall. Durov then claimed the company had been effectively taken over by Vladimir Putin’s allies, suggesting his ousting was the result both of his refusal to hand over personal details of users to the Russian Federal Security Service and his refusal to hand over the personal details of people who were members of a Vkontakte group dedicated to the Euromaidan protest movement. Durov then left Russia and stated he had “no plans to go back”.
Durov left Russia in 2014, stating that he had no desire to go back and that “the country is incompatible with Internet business at the moment”.
“The no. 1 reason for me to support and help launch Telegram was to build a means of communication that can’t be accessed by the Russian security agencies,” Durov once told TechCrunch.
And now, everyone in this world has a secure channel for themselves. Isn’t it great?
